N'GENIUS for Chemical Process Industries

The N'GENIUS Series™ is the most advanced family of materials for chemical processing infrastructure.

Conventional 300 Series austenitic stainless steels are widely used in the chemical processing industry, but their resistance to general corrosion, localised corrosion, stress corrosion cracking and erosion corrosion depends on many factors including:

  • Alloy composition of the grade(s) selected for the different types of chemical process media
  • Concentration of the various chemical process media
  • Whether the chemical process media contains chlorides or fluorides or various impurities
  • Temperature of the chemical process media.

What's more, conventional 300 Series grades of austenitic stainless steels have low mechanical strength properties relative to the N'GENIUS Series™.

Therefore, when piping systems (pipes, fittings and flanges) and engineering equipment (including tanks, vessels, pumps, valves, filters, centrifuges, mixers and agitators) are designed in accordance with the various international codes, standards and specifications using conventional austenitic stainless steels, their wall thicknesses are increased, which in turn increases the overall cost of projects.

How does the N'GENIUS Series™ help?

How does the N'GENIUS Series™ help?

The N'GENIUS Series™ contains an infinite number Alloy Types and Variants, providing a wide range of advanced material solutions for the chemical process industry.

This enables engineers to choose from a wide selection of N'GENIUS™ alloys which have a unique combination of mechanical and corrosion resistance properties and provide significant advantages for all major projects.

Performance benefits of the N'GENIUS ICONIC Series™ and the N'GENIUS INFINITY Series™ for chemical process industry applications include:

  • Unique combination of mechanical and corrosion resistance properties
  • Higher mechanical strength properties compared to conventional austenitic stainless steels for high pressure service and improved safety
  • Higher allowable design stresses
  • Reduced wall thicknesses can lead to weight savings, reduced transport costs and reduced fabrication time which results in less CO2 emissions and an overall reduction in construction and project costs
  • Excellent ductility due to a more stable single-phase austenitic microstructure
  • Excellent toughness at sub-zero and cryogenic temperatures
  • Superior resistance to Localised Corrosion (Pitting, Crevice and Intergranular Corrosion) in a wide range of service conditions and process environments
  • Superior resistance to General Corrosion even in low pH acid environments
  • Superior resistance to Hydrogen Embrittlement due to a more stable single-phase austenitic microstructure
  • >Superior resistance to Stress Corrosion Cracking (SSCC and Chloride SCC) in a wide range of service conditions and process environments
  • Increased safety can be built into system design.
  • Extended Service Life in view of their significantly improved corrosion performance
  • Improved through-life cycle costs and sustainability

Selecting N'GENIUS Series™ for Chemical Process Industry Applications

Selecting N'GENIUS Series™ for Chemical Process Industry Applications

The Alloy Types and Variants of the N'GENIUS Series™ enables engineers to select different minimum levels of Pitting Resistance Equivalent (PREN / PRENW) to optimise the corrosion performance of the materials selected for the different chemical process environments such as Organic or Inorganic, Phosphoric Acid, Caustic and Sulphuric Acid environments containing higher concentrations or at higher temperatures.

The following is a selection of some of the N'GENIUS Series™ alloys that are well suited for pipelines, piping systems and engineering equipment applications for the chemical process industry:
